Digital Humanities Summer School 2026 | Concept Note

Undergraduate humanities education in India has historically trained students within single-disciplinary silos. The engagement in the field of humanities has transformed with the advent of the digital tools and the interlinked spaces, breaking disciplinary boundaries and connecting, overlapping teaching-learning and research. This summer school proposes to address the possibilities of the ever expanding and evolving field of the humanities. Through the introduction to tools of computation, data, and digital media, the workshop model focuses on equipping students with understanding, defining, and engaging with the gap created through boundaries. Global humanities scholarship, from platform studies to computational narratology to digital archiving now routinely draws on methods once considered outside the purview of humanistic inquiry, and Indian higher education, pushed further by the National Education Policy 2020’s emphasis on multidisciplinary and holistic learning, expects the same from the next generation of undergraduate students.

Introducing Digital Humanities at the undergraduate level matters precisely because it is early. A student who encounters text encoding, data visualisation, or computational text analysis alongside literary theory in their undergraduate years does not experience DH as a late add-on to a humanities identity already formed — they build that identity as interdisciplinary from the outset. This is a different, and more durable, outcome than retrofitting DH literacy onto scholars trained entirely within one discipline.

The urgency is sharpened by what is already happening to research and, before that, to reading itself: cultural narratives increasingly circulate on platforms, through games, and through AI-mediated tools that traditional humanities methods may not equip students to analyse and build on with criticality. This DH Summer School that reaches undergraduates while their disciplinary habits are still forming is positioned to shape how the next cohort of Indian humanities scholars works — not only as literature students, but as humanities scholars for whom moving across disciplinary boundaries is a natural consequence of their scholarly inquiries.

• Introduce participants to the core methodological debates in Digital Humanities: narratology and the digital text, game studies, cultural memory, and posthumanist approaches to authorship.
• Provide structured, hands-on training in DH tools in active scholarly use: Twine, Gephi, Palladio, and text-analysis and topic-modelling software.
• Build critical fluency in AI tools relevant to humanities research, alongside a clear-eyed account of their ethical stakes. 
• Equip participants to design DH-informed teaching units for their own institutions.
• Establish a working, cross-institutional network of DH-engaged humanities scholars through the CHRIST–DHARTI collaboration.

• Build and read network graphs using Gephi, and work with Linked Open Data. 
• Apply text-analysis and topic-modelling methods to a text corpus. 
• Build geospatial visualisations using Palladio. 
• Evaluate AI tools for DH research with attention to their ethical stakes. 
• Design a DH-informed pedagogical unit for their own teaching context.

CHRIST (Deemed to be University) traces its origins to Christ College, founded in 1969 under the educational vision of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and administered by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). The University Grants Commission conferred autonomy on the college in 2004, and in 2008 the Ministry of Human Resource Development declared it a Deemed-to-be University. It has been accredited by NAAC since 1998 and currently holds an ‘A+’ grade. 

The Pune Lavasa Campus was established in 2014 within the Sahyadri hill range and houses five constituent schools — Humanities and Performing Arts, Business Management, Commerce, Finance & Accountancy, Law, and Sciences. It is this campus’s School of Humanities and Performing Arts that hosts the present Summer School.

The Digital Humanities Alliance for Research and Teaching Innovations (DHARTI), formerly the Digital Humanities Alliance of India (DHAI), founded in 2018 , is an initiative organising and facilitating digital humanities practice in India, within and beyond academic institutions. Its secretariat is hosted at IIT Delhi.

DHARTI works to build research, pedagogical, and practitioner networks amongst Indian DH scholars, showcase and extend DH projects from India, and give these projects international visibility; DHARTI was officially recognised as a Constituent Organisation by the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO), the global umbrella organization for Digital Humanities, in 2023.

14 sessions, one hour each, held online twice weekly (Wednesdays and Saturdays, with a single opening session in the first week). Each live session is paired with asynchronous engagement on Padlet and Google Classroom, so that participants continue working with the week’s concepts and tools between sessions rather than only during contact hours.

Certification requires BOTH of the following, not either alone: 

• A minimum of 10 of the 14 contact hours attended, without exception.
• Successful completion and presentation of the capstone project (a culminating assignment that allows participants to apply the knowledge, skills, and tools acquired during the Summer School to a practical or research-based task.) at the Valedictory Session on 3 October.

A participant who meets only one of these two conditions will not receive a certificate.
