SUMMARY:IIT Delhi DHWS2 (2026): Geo-Spatial and Network Analysis
DESCRIPTION:The second Digital Humanities Winter School (DHWS2) was organised by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences\, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) and held from 12–17 January 2026 at the IIT Delhi campus. Building on the inaugural DHWS held in 2025\, this edition focused on spatial and network approaches\, particularly mapping\, connecting and visualising humanities data to uncover relationships across places\, people and texts. DHWS 2026 was supported by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Savex Technologies. \nThe programme combined a pre-Winter School online bootcamp in Python and R with hands-on training in Spatial Humanities\, GIS\, computational text analysis\, network analysis\, AI and machine learning. Participants worked with tools and platforms including Recogito\, QGIS\, qgis2web\, OpenStreetMap\, GeoNames\, Wikidata\, Google Colab and JupyterHub. The faculty included David Joseph Wrisley (New York University Abu Dhabi\, UAE)\, Dr. Arjun Ghosh (IIT Delhi\, India)\, Dr. Sudeep Narayan Banerjee (IIT Delhi\, India)\, Dr. Rajarshi Dasgupta (IIT Delhi\, India) and Dr. Vinayak Dasgupta (Shiv Nadar University\, India). The Winter School also moved beyond conventional classroom instruction. Participants visited the Humayun’s Tomb Museum and undertook collaborative activities connecting material\, spatial and digital forms of knowledge. The programme concluded with participant presentations and a valedictory session\, including a collaborative cross-stitch map of India marking the places from which participants had travelled to attend the Winter School. \nFor more information\, visit the official webpage of DHWS 2026 here.

The session featured Ishita Shah\, curator\, designer and historian\, and founder of Curating for Culture (India). The talk examined the evolving landscape of Digital Humanities through the intersections of design\, historiography and digital archiving\, with Shah reflecting on the challenges and choices involved in contemporary curatorial practice\, particularly the relationship between research\, writing and coding. The event was held exclusively for DHARTI members.

DESCRIPTION:The DHARTI Governing Body organised a virtual roundtable on India’s evolving role in the international DH community\, discussing how DHARTI can deepen digital humanities work across India. \nThe organisation of the roundtable was greatly influenced by the then-recent ADHO decision to adopt double-blind review for DH2026\, which sparked essential global discussions about fairness\, inclusion\, and review practices. This led to the need for a common forum to articulate Indian perspectives on: \n\nWhat unique contributions can India bring to global DH from the Global South?\nHow do multilingualism\, decolonial approaches\, infrastructure needs\, and interdisciplinary networks shape our work?\nWhat role can DHARTI play in mentoring\, networking\, and amplifying Indian DH internationally?\n\nRegistration link can be found here.

The session featured Prof. Patricia Murrieta-Flores\, Distinguished Professor in Digital Humanities and Artificial Intelligence at Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico) and Chair in Digital Humanities at Lancaster University (United Kingdom). The talk explored how Artificial Intelligence can be used to unlock and analyse five centuries of historical Spanish-language data\, highlighting the possibilities of AI and computational methods for working with large-scale historical records and opening new avenues for research in the Digital Humanities.

SUMMARY:DHARTI2026 Conference: Decolonising the Digital: Social Justice\, Inclusion and Equitable Knowledge Production
DESCRIPTION:DHARTI2026 is the fourth conference in the continuing conference series that began with the DHAI2018 inaugural conference\, followed by the DHARTI Twitter Conference 2020\, DHARTI2022 and DHARTI2024. Themed\, “Decolonising the Digital: Social Justice\, Inclusion and Equitable Knowledge Production\,” the 2026 edition will be hosted by Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT)\, located in Bhubaneswar\, Odisha\, India\, from 18–20 December 2026\, with pre-conference workshops scheduled for 18 December. \nThe conference will provide a collaborative platform for examining the past\, present and future of Digital Humanities in India\, with multiple parallel sessions and accompanying workshops. DHARTI’s call for hosts describes the conference as a space intended to stimulate debate across the diverse configurations of Digital Humanities and to encourage interdisciplinary participation from fields including language and literature\, visual art\, performance and theatre studies\, media studies\, history\, sociology\, psychology\, language technologies\, library studies\, methodologies\, software and critical computational studies. \nView the full CFP here. Building on the previous editions of DHWS\, the 2027 edition shifts its focus towards Digital Storytelling\, Electronic Literature and Game Studies\, combining conceptual discussions with practical training in digital tools and creative methods. \nThe programme will include an online pre-Winter School bootcamp on Python and Ren’Py\, introducing programming concepts and their application to branching narratives and visual-novel design.
